Grid Computing am LRZ - An Overview

Research Cooperations

In the scope of Grid Computing the LRZ participates in a constantly increasing number of projects. The LRZ is/was actively involved in the following Grid Computing projects and initiatives. These projects have different directions and comprise project partners from the Munich universities as well as German universities, European computing centres, or international research centres worldwide.

IGE

Initiative for Globus in Europe

Project duration: 2011-2013

The initiative for Globus in Europe (IGE) is a EU FP7 project to coordinate European Globus activities. The main objectives of IGE are to continuously support the European computing infrastructures, to serve as a central point of contact in Europe for Globus, to drive the Globus developments forward in accordance with the requirements of European users and to strengthen the influence of European developers in the Globus Alliance.

PRACE

Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe

Project duration: preparation phase 2008-2010

EU 7th framework programme prepares high performance computing infrastructure.

DEISA

Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications

Project duration: 2005-2008, 2008-2011

DEISA is a consortium of leading national supercomputing centres that currently deploys and operates a persistent, production quality, distributed supercomputing environment with continental scope. The purpose of this EU FP6 and FP7 funded research infrastructure is to enable scientific discovery across a broad spectrum of science and technology, by enhancing and reinforcing European capabilities in the area of high performance computing.

Atlas Data Challenge / NorduGrid

Grid Solution for Wide Area Computing and Data Handling

Project duration: 2002-2007

In cooperation with the physics department of the University of Munich.

The LRZ is hosting the GIIS (Grid Index Informations Server) for all participating German Sites.

In the context of the recent ATLAS Data Challenge 1245 Jobs were running at the LRZ with an efficiency of 60 percent (for comparison: Nordugrid as a whole ca. 60%, LCG ca. 40%)
